The Word “Diet” Never Meant What You Think

Somewhere along the way, “diet” became a dirty word.

Say you’re on one, and people assume you’re miserable and starving yourself.

But that’s not what the word ever meant.

“Diet” comes from the Greek word “diaita” — meaning way of living or mode of life.

It was never about guilt or restriction.

It was about how you live.

The goal wasn’t to punish the body — it was to steward it.

How Culture Twisted a Good Thing

When the world redefined diet in the 19th century, it also redefined health.

It became less about honoring your body and more about fixing what’s “wrong” with it.

Now, many Christians avoid the topic altogether.

We overeat, under-move, and call it grace — when in truth, we’re ignoring the gift God gave us.

Gluttony has quietly become one of the most accepted sins in the church.

It steals our energy.

It fogs our minds.

It dulls our ability to lead and love well.

We pray for clarity and strength while neglecting the very vessel God designed to carry them.

Returning to the Original Design

Redeeming your diet isn’t just about cutting carbs or counting macros.

It’s about returning to the original meaning — a way of living that honors the life God gave you.

A redeemed diet means:

  • You eat with intention, not impulse.

  • You move because your body was made for it.

  • You rest because even God rested.

It’s not a restriction — it’s worship.

And when you live this way, you’ll notice something powerful:

Your energy, your focus, your peace — they all increase.

Because when your way of living aligns with God’s design, your whole life starts to change.

Scripture to reflect on:

“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”

— 1 Corinthians 10:31

Challenge for the week:

Don’t “go on a diet.”

Instead, live one.

Ask yourself before each meal:

“Is this choice honoring the body God gave me?”

You’ll be amazed at how simple obedience transforms your health — and your heart.

A Question Worth Asking

I personally love asking myself this question:

“What would my life look like if I were in the best shape I could be in?”

Would you have more energy for your family?

More clarity in your purpose?

More confidence in how you show up every day?

Because the truth is — when your body is strong, your spirit has more room to lead.

And I believe that’s exactly what God wants for you.
